Progress Report of Shannon Gächter

Why did you choose to do your apprenticeship as a Business Merchant at ZFV?
I already knew that I didn’t want to train to be a Business Merchant at a normal office. I wanted to have an apprenticeship at a place where I would have lots of contact with people and where I could use my language skills, for example in a travel agency, in a transport company or in a hotel. Finally I chose to do an apprenticeship in a hotel because I felt the most comfortable there.

What expectations did you have at the beginning of your apprenticeship?
That I would be able to do a lot of different things that I had seen or done during my trial period. For example answering the telephone, taking reservations, checking in and out our guests as well as dealing with things in teamwork. And up to now, it has been just that.

What surprised you in a positive way?
That every day is different. I experience a great deal everyday and I can finally see what goes on behind the curtains.

What are or were the greatest challenges during your apprenticeship at ZFV?
One day I was alone at the reception and suddenly all the guests came at once and then the telephone also started ringing. I had to try and sort out everything quickly but without losing my cool. I was able to bring it all together and I felt proud of myself.

What was your biggest moment of success during your apprenticeship at ZFV?
One of my biggest moments of success up till now was when I had to replace an ill working colleague and I had to take on the duties of a fully-trained receptionist. It was so great that they placed so much trust in me.

What would you like to do in the future, repectively after finishing your apprenticeship?
I am not sure yet. I think I would like to work in a job where I have contact with people and can use different languages.
